Your friend basically asked: What is the difference was between a crazy person and a Catholic? But for review he stated that prayer was no different than a crazy person speaking to people who were not there. In this case of the religious who pray, even if they were to receive an answer to their prayer they are then deemed to be crazy. So no matter what result you get your friend is saying you are crazy?! Actually, your friend is saying that God doesn't exist. So if you do receive an answer to your prayer you are nuts.
Don't worry brother you are actually quite reasonable. That is like saying that results say nothing. In this case we can rule out all scientific reasoning via the scientific method and any research done anywhere.
Based on this faulty reasoning let us look at the definition of Communication.
2.the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs (Dictonary.com).
A conversation is imparting this exchange from one being to another. The difference does not rely on reality as your friend may claim, but on his own personal world view in a decision he has already made. It is not even scientific. The answer to your prayer whether it be an actual voice or another way that God communicates His answer to your prayer is a reaction to the stimuli you produced for God to react. In your friend's view whether or not your prayer is answered is not enough for him to believe in God. At least that is what he is really saying.
In deciding to state that a religious person has already equaled the status of a crazy person is to initially deny that the religious person is actually talking to an existing being. His argument is merely based on his lack of belief. We should respect all people who believe differently than we do but we can not deny that this statement is merely founded on his own personal opinion.
If we truly want to examine the differences in situation we need to examine 1. a crazy person and 2. (in your case) a Catholic person.
1. A crazy person is not rational in the sense that he does not need one to converse with. (nothing)
2. A Catholic is rational in the sense that he does need someone to converse with ( That is God, the Saints, or angels).
1. It is understood that the crazy person is not really speaking to any being.
2. The Catholic Understands that he speaks to an actual being (making him or herself a rational person)
In summary your friend simply stated his beliefs with no proof.
If you really want to see some rational thinking try my video playlist. All you have to do is watch. In this I have recently added the 6 Steps to Catholicism that has a good explanation for the Existence of God. As for voices there is a rational Answer try #32 for that. If you want a thorough explanation for the existence of God I strongly suggest going through the videos they are quite enlightening.
Quite honestly, if you are not satisfied with this answer I am more than happy to do more research and find someone who can explain it better than myself in order to explain the Rational Thinking of the Catholic Faith. Just let me know if I'm not done. I am glad to help any way I can. Additionally, if you see that my thinking is questionable ask away
